As dental offices re-open during COVID-19, the CDC has published specific guidelines to ensure a safe environment for dental health care providers (DHCP) and patients. One recommendation significantly affects the standard of dental hygiene treatment provided to patients. The CDC recommends avoiding the use of aerosol generating equipment and states specifically that use of ultrasonic scalers is not recommended. This presents a sudden paradigm swing for the dental hygienist who uses a blended treatment approach that includes hand instruments and ultrasonic scaling devices (piezo and magnetostrictive). Some states have taken the recommendation a step further and issued a mandate which prohibits the use of ultrasonic scalers at this time. Dental Hygienists are well educated and prepared to meet this new normal for providing optimal services to our patients. |
