We are mostly water, in fact, we are 50-65% water! Living organisms and plants require water, and nutrients, to thrive or even to survive. All treatment in health care should be based on water, ionic exchange and evolutionary biology including that performed by the specialty of Oral Medicine (that’s Dentistry!). Dental caries is a dynamic process, occurring in a wet environment, as a result of de-mineralization due to Dysbiosis. As health care practitioners, we must work with the oral cavity to produce positive modifications to the oral environment including the placement of bioactive materials. Bioactive materials re-mineralize tooth structure by ionic exchange in the wet environment, and are hydrophilic, enhancing the success of wet bonding. Indeed, bioactive materials may also benefit the oral microbiome, further improving the overall health of our patients. After all, we are all holobionts, the union of host and symbionts. |
