Platform switch and platform bone switch are subtle strategies used by the clinician to preserve crestal bone around implants. The first vertical 2mm of bone bone support has been termed the "ring of bone," the most critical bone to preserve in order to avoid implant surface exposure and risk late term peri-implantitis.
Critical also with the ring of bone is making sure there is width of bone to preserve over time especially at the marginal bone in the esthetic zone. Platform bone switch as defined by Danza is a prescribed narrowing of the neck of an implant to provide relief for bone. The net effect is that there is more bone support for papilla, less risk to marginal bone and an overall decreased titanium footprint in the implant restoration.
During this CE webinar, we will cover • management of the crestal bone around implants • understanding the risk of peri-implantitis may start from surgical decision making at the time of implant placement • papilla management requires attention be made to both the platform switch and the platform bone switch
